Carleton Pennington Frost was born the son of Benjamin and Mary Brant, in Sullivan (NH) on 29 May 1830. He attended Thetford (VT) Academy, Dartmouth College (A.B. 1852), Dartmouth Medical School (M.D. 1856), and New York Medical College (M.D. 1857). He married Eliza DuBois and they had two children: Gilman DuBois and Edwin Brant. Dr. Frost set up practice in St. Johnsbury (VT) but soon enlisted as surgeon for the 15th Vermont Volunteers.
